Longlisted for the inaugural Klaus Flugge Prize, an important new illustration prize for children's books. August 2015 Debut of the Month
Emma Carlisle brings the world of a little girl’s imagination gloriously to life in this truly lovely picturebook. Laura loves her practice sessions – she practices being a kangaroo, a parrot and an elephant, but best of all is lion practice when she can leap, hide, run and ROAR! It’s a bit much for Mum and Dad, but they find a way to accommodate their little lion. The pencil and crayon illustrations perfectly match the playful, lively tone of the story and are full of funny little details for children and parents to spot. Emma Carlisle is an exciting new talent in children’s books.
Laura loves to practise. She's been a kangaroo, a parrot and a crocodile - but nothing beats being a LION! It's fun to leap, run and roar really loudly, isn't it? Laura's patient parents aren't so sure. So when Laura takes a lion-sized leap too far, she gets a small telling off. But like all good lions, Laura soon bounces back and it isn't very long before her Mum, Dad and baby brother are joining in the game.
Emma Carlisle loved to draw from a young age, encouraged by her parents with endless trips to the library and a good supply of pencils and poster paint. She went on to study Illustration at the University of Plymouth, and in 2014 she graduated from the Cambridge MA in Children's Book Illustration with full Distinctions. She was Highly Commended by The Macmillan Prize for Children's Book Illustration in 2013. Lion Practice is her first picture book. Emma lives in Malvern.
