Young fans of high-stakes adventure stories set in vividly-described other worlds and starring intrepid young protagonists are being particularly well served right now. Hot on the heels of adventures such as Mia and the Lightcasters, Nevermoor and Skandar and the Unicorn Thief comes Paper Dragons.

Paper Dragons stars twelve-year-old Zhi Ging, an orphan, something of an outcast, now training in Hok Woh, home of the immortals, to become immortal herself. It emerges that she has special powers, but they only serve to put her into more danger. With her own life and that of her friends at stake, Zhi Ging must take on deadly enemies, and work out her own identity in the process.

Author Siobhan McDermott grew up in Hong Kong and her experiences inspire the fantasy world she has created, giving it a distinct feel and making it a very special one to explore. The next episode can’t come soon enough!

It's good for boys and girls who are 9 and above and I am excited about the next book in the series!

Paper Dragons - The Fight for the Hidden Realm is an exciting and interesting story about a girl who fails a test, makes her own lantern and then begins to complete challenges that will make her immortal.

It is a great fantasy story about Zhi Ging and her adventures at Hok Woh as she tries to complete challenges and also find out about the Fui Gwai which is making people who fail the challenges vanish.

Paper Dragons was an interesting and exciting story which immerses the reader in a different and unique world. I really enjoyed the detailed descriptions of Zhi Ging’s adventures and would definitely recommend this book.

This book was enjoyable to read. The characters were interesting and there was a lot of vivid imagery to bring the world of Zhi Ging to life. I think having a book with a 12 year old girl hero was very inspiring to me and I really liked that aspect of the book. The various challenges that the main character experiences were all innovative and it felt as though I had been transported to a new and exciting world.... Read Full Review

A young girl is not fitting in with her village, but everything changes when she is invited to the underwater school and an evil spirit comes to stop her. Beautifully written and super exciting!

If I had to rate this book out of 5 stars I'd use all five! It was very descriptive and beautifully written. I could picture everything in my mind.

I struggled a bit at the start of the book as I found some words were tricky because they weren't written in English. But I soon got used to it when I released they were easy to pronounce.

The story is about a young girl called Zhi Ging. She lives in a village called Fei Chui which is on the jade mountain. Unfortunately she doesn't seem to fit in. Her hair doesn't glow like everyone else's which makes her feel like an outcast. That makes her upset so she comes up with a plan to make herself popular.... Read Full Review
