In a nutshell: the agony and the ecstasy of the pre-teen
The return of Arthur Bean, self-proclaimed creative genius and star of one already highly successful diary-based narrative is to be welcomed. Arthur is a rather special voice in fiction for young people: he’s smart, perceptive (except when it comes to his relationships with girls), frequently cynical and often very funny. His adventures – mostly concerning girls and the accidental loan/theft of a video camera, something that weighs heavily on him - are recounted in a variety of forms, from diary entries, texts and emails to homework assignments, even the script of a zombie movie he’s writing. It makes for varied, refreshing reading and feels both real and true. As well as the usual issues of friendships and first romances, Arthur is also mourning the loss of his mother, and this too is sensitively handled. ~ Andrea Reece

About
Scenes from the Epic Life of a Total Genius Synopsis
Lights. Camera. Action! Arthur Bean's life has taken a turn for the adventurous - two girlfriends to deal with, and a blockbuster film to co-write, produce and direct. How crazy can one school year get?Arthur and Robbie have called a truce now that the writing contest and school play are over...but plans go astray when Arthur's new girlfriend Anila gets jealous of his friendship with Kennedy. And then there's that little problem of the movie camera Arthur and Robbie borrowed to film their upcoming blockbuster movie. As Arthur's life goes off the rails all over again, laughs for the reader are right on track. Emails, doodles, texts, newspaper articles, AV Club rules (which Arthur and Robbie usually break) give the story the same engaging look as A Year in the Life of a (Total and Complete) Genius.

Praise for the series:
Arthur is a self-dramatizing memoirist with a subversive sensibility, sharp-witted with a magnet eye for the ridiculous. His writings and personality also bring to mind Jeff Kinney's hilarious schemer and pretension-piercing fellow diarist, Greg Heffley. -- Sherie Posesorski Vancouver Sun
This genius series debut is a fresh and funny story about a boy whose bad luck can't dampen his spirit - or his love of writing. Books for Everybody
Incredibly funny and bittersweet. Highly recommended -- Athina Clarke Readings
At once funny, outrageous, thoughtful, and informative, this is a story with something for everyone, and Arthur's is a voice readers won't soon forget. The Manitoba Library Association
Arthur is a sweet and funny character and it is a lot of fun to join him on his journey through the ups and downs of junior high -- Kim Ferguson Shelf Talkers, 49thshelf.com
