Little Lord Fauntleroy Synopsis

Little Lord Fauntleroy: A Drama in Three Acts Founded on the Story is the first work of well-known author and playwright Frances Hodgson Burnett. Burnett, who was born in England but lived most of her life in the United States, is perhaps best known for her work The Secret Garden. This text was first released in serial form in St. Nicholas Magazine, the popularity of the story led to it being released independently a short time later.

Little Lord Fauntleroy tells the tale of young Cedric Errol, an American who lives in relative poverty with this mother. Errol's life is turned on its head when he is informed that he is the heir to an Earldom and has been named Lord Fauntleroy. The story progresses from this point, telling a morality tale in which characters attempt to undermine young Cedric's good fortune while the new Lord Fauntleroy practices compassion and understanding.

The story was wildly popular at the time of its original publication and is said to have made a major impact on the fashion of the times. The suit worn by young Cedric Errol, which was described in detail and presented in illustrations throughout the book, became standard dress-wear for young middle-class boys in America. Burnett's other stories had a similar impact on contemporary fashions, and her literary impact must never be separated from the impact she had on fashion.

Little Lord Fauntleroy is an excellent book that can be enjoyed by both children and adults. It is a classic and timeless story and truly one of Burnett's greatest works. If you came upon this book after having read The Secret Garden, you will surely find this story to be at least on par with the author's most well known work.
