A great gift for myth-obsessed readers, and highly recommended for school libraries, Tom Holland’s The Wolf-Girl, the Greeks and the Gods: a Tale of the Persian Wars presents an epic tale of otherworldly gods and human heroes and heroines, superbly enhanced by Jason Cockcroft’s stylishly dramatic illustrations.
Narrated by Gorgo, a Spartan queen who declares that she has come to tell “a story unlike any that has been told before. It is the story of the greatest war ever fought”, this is a re- telling of the highest order. Boldly brimming with action and emotion, the tale begins when Gorgo dreams of a “monstrous” wolf as her mother lies dying. A wolf that brings her “home to Sparta for a reason”, she infers.
After her mother’s last words warn that “Danger is coming”, a new world of brutal battles is unleashed — with Sparta under fierce threat, Gorgo invokes the blood of Zeus and wolfish power to lead her nation.
Driven by drama, this dazzling conjuration of an against-the-odds defeat of a mighty invader melds myth and history to tremendous effect.

'The Wolf-Girl, the Greeks and the Gods is a wonder, as beautiful to look at as it is entrancing to read. Jason Cockcroft’s illustrations are jaw-dropping, and Tom Holland’s prose took me back to my own childhood introductions to these extraordinary mythological worlds in Roger Lancelyn Green’s Tales of the Greek Heroes and Leon Garfield’s and Charles Keeping’s The God Beneath the Sea.” - Frank Cottrell-Boyce
