Debut of the Month July 2017 | In a nutshell: Pirates, dinosaurs, zombies, big brothers in an irresistible comic adventure
There are so many pirate stories you’d think it impossible to write one that’s fresh and original, so congratulations to Paul Whitfield for doing just that. Narrated by Emilie, it starts when she discovers her parents have been kidnapped by pirates. She and her brother Will immediately set off to rescue them. It turns out that Will has secret skills, dinosaur training for example, which all come in handy as they meet a succession of scary creature, from dinosaurs to zombies. Ellie isn’t entirely trustworthy either it seems; nonetheless, her direct to reader narrative provides the book with a reassuring sense of order no matter how crazy the adventures get, and also sets up lots of really good jokes. Packed with illustrations, this will appeal to fans of other clever madcap romps such as the Mr Gum books or Circus of Thieves series. ~Andrea Reece
