Chosen by November 2011 Guest Editor Steve Cole, the Spider-Man comics by Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, Gerry Conway et al: "Stan Lee and the merry Marvel Bullpen of writers and illustrators dominated my childhood reading. I bought several comics each week, but Spider-Man was my absolute favourite. The stories were crammed full of fast-flung fists and funnies, but the more mundane misadventures and dilemmas of his alter-ego Peter Parker were just as compelling. The mix of action and emotion made the characters seem real in a way the likes of indestructible Superman could never match, and made you root for Spidey and his friends all the more. I’m delighted the comics of my youth – and those made in the decade before I was born – have been collected in ten (and counting) ‘Essential’ volumes which truly live up to their name."
