Young Suzie Wen loves inventing things and she loves the TV series Space Blasters, so it’s a logical step for her to create the Super 3-D TV Gizmo: plug it in and the show will blast out around her, almost like virtual reality.
Things don’t quite go to plan though, and somehow Suzie finds herself in the series and actually onboard TUBS (The Universe’s Best Spacecraft). Before you can say, ‘Beam me up, Scottie’, she’s part of the small crew and helping Captain Jane, Spaceman Jack and Five-Eyed Frank the alien to save the universe.
There’s lots to enjoy in the story which is packed with excitement as well as humour, and the ‘fun fact’ boxes interspersed throughout the story with their snippets of science information are a nice extra. Whatever is going on around her, Suzie thinks like a scientist and it’s a clever, accessible and entertaining mix of story and STEM, perfect for newly confident readers.
As Suzie points out early on, the crew of TUBS always has each other’s back, and that also makes for a positive reading experience.
