Baby Worries… by Frances Mackay and illustrated by Dotti Colvin is a delightful 15-page children’s picture book. Each page has one or two lines of text and a lively, energetic illustration. The words are easy for children to understand. The illustrations are the stars of the book! They are all humorous, very detailed, and full of life. They have bright, cheerful colours and the expressions on the people’s faces are priceless! Baby’s family members are all different and have unique features like big eyebrows, or muscles. They all think that perhaps Baby will grow up to look like them. Baby is a bit anxious as he exaggerates their features in his imagination and worries that he will look very strange. However, Baby grows up and looks just how he was meant to look: like himself, but with one surprise feature! The book teaches young children all about family members/connections and having physical features in common. It also teaches them that we are all individuals even if we share certain characteristics with our family. It teaches children to deal with anxiety. Often what we are anxious about, does not happen. There also is an inclusive message as Baby’s family members are diverse. This is an amusing, sweet book. I highly recommend it to children up to about 6 years old.
