Written in verse, the unnamed protagonist has always felt too big, too assertive, and too clumsy around her peers. But it's not until she enters high school and her best friend Li Li gets a boyfriend, that she feels alone. Awash in new cliques and new crushes, the narrator begins to sink into the shadows. Slowly, though, the narrator begins to get her own shot at first kisses and new friendships. But when the boy of her affection starts making eyes for Li Li - whether Li Li wants the attention or not - trouble for this relationship deepens.
