Singing Wheels (Classic Reprint) Synopsis

Excerpt from Singing Wheels

If it had not been for the railing round the driver's seat, Lightning Joe would surely have tumbled from the coach and landed on the hard, rocky road.

Forward over every bump in' the road went the ?ying horses. What did they care for bumps? The bugle call meant that the stage station, or stopping place, was not far ahead. There, other horses would be waiting to carry the heavy coach farther on its way. The tired horses, which had been pulling the stage for three long hours, would have a good dinner and a well-earned rest. N o wonder they pulled with all their might!

Up and down over all the bumps went the two small front wheels and the two large back wheels of the stage. Forward and back between the wheels rocked the coach, for all the world like a big rock ing chair. Forward and back it rocked on thick leather straps which Were fastened beneath the coach and which served in place of springs.

The yellow dust of the road rose like a cloud beneath the horses' feet: All at once, through the thick veil of dust, Lightning Joe saw a deep hollow at the side of the road. Could the wheels of the stage miss the hollow? If not, ten chances to one the coach would turn (over. But no stage was going to upset with Lightning Joe on the box.
