Misa Sugiura’s Momo Arashima Steals the Sword of the Wind has all the hallmarks of a fantasy classic — a reluctant heroine who just wants an ordinary life, the inexorable call to embark on a high-stakes quest, secret family connections to powerful entities — plus the magic of Japanese mythology.

Sugiura’s writing is vibrant and visual, with Momo’s emotional journey conjured with exhilarating heart, not least against the backdrop of her dad being lost to the sea, and her mother being unwell. Mocked by her classmates for blurring the lines between the real-world and the fantastical myths Mom used to tell her, Momo isn’t like other girls. Far from it, as things turns out. After being attacked by a sunken-cheeked, toothless shikome death hag, the myths become very real, and then she discovers that her mother is “a goddess — a kami. The spirit and guardian of the Island of Mysteries”, and responsible for making sure nothing escapes from Yomi, land of the dead. Being a half-goddess herself, it falls to Momo to save the world from being set upon by demons from Yomi.

Perfectly-plotted for maximum exhilaration, Momo’s adventure is edge-of-your-seat energetic, with comic moments and emotional depth dappling the drama.

Momo Arishma Steals The Sword Of The Wind is a funny, warm story about Momo, a girl who is bullied at school and cares for her ill mother at home. The real adventure begins when she meets Niko, a talking fox in a waistcoat and flatcap who shows her the truth: Momo’s mother is actually a Japanese kami (Shintō goddess) named Takiri-bime, and the island that her mother is sworn to protect is overflowing with demons and other evil creatures from Yomi, the land of the dead. Unless Momo somehow manages to stop them and their evil king Shuten-dōji, Momo’s mom will die. Even with the help of magical Niko and ex-friend Danny, can Momo manage to summon the power of Susanno’o and wield Kusanagi, the sword of the wind?... Read Full Review
