Mya-Rose Craig is the best person to introduce young readers to the wonders of bird migration. Only 21, she’s been passionate about birds and nature all her life, at 17 becoming the youngest person to see half the world’s bird species. Her book tells the amazing stories of birds that migrate incredible distances over continents, mountains and oceans, including the Arctic Tern, which travels 100,000 miles every year, the stork, and the swallow, familiar to all of us here in the UK. Over colourful double pages she describes their remarkable journeys, explaining why they make them and what helps them, also including myths invented by the people who watched them flying away to explain where they might go.
Lynn Scurfield’s illustrations with their bold colours and rich texture make this lovely to look at and share. Each page features children too, their response to the birds as they fly over their homelands reminding us of our connection to the natural world.
