May 2023 Book of the Month | A Julia Eccleshare Pick of the Month May 2023

Keen actress Edie Trimmer is bitterly disappointed when she doesn’t get a part in the drama club’s production of Oliver. What’s worse is that her best friend does which means Edie has find some new ways to spend her time.

When she is given an old notebook and pen and some ink she settles down to write a story. But someone else seems to be telling the story too!

There is another Edie Trimmer who lives in great poverty in Victorian London and modern day Edie finds herself at risk of being swapped into her life!

Jacqueline Wilson’s excellent use of a simple time slip enables her to bring the London highlighted by Charles Dicken’s Oliver Twist to life for contemporary readers as Edie comes face to face with the extreme poverty of Victorian London and, particularly, the suffering of children living then.

In a story full of her trademark compassion, Jacqueline Wilson thoughtfully explores the devastating effect of poverty on children at any time and, in doing so, subtly provokes readers to think about contemporary poverty.

The best Jaqueline Wilson book ever! I was hooked and couldn't put it down! A must-read! The worst thing about it is that you can't put it down!!

The book that I am reviewing is called The Other Edie Trimmer. It is written by Jaqueline Wilson and is mainly set in the Victorian era. The main characters are Alex (Edie's best friend), Missus(Edie's evil master), and of course Edie Trimmer herself. In my eyes, this was by far the very BEST Jaqueline Wilson book that I have ever read, I was hooked from the very first sentence and couldn't put it down. I especially enjoyed the images that amazing description creates in your head, at some points, I felt I was watching a movie instead of reading a book! This book (from start to finish) only took me a few hours to read as the plot was so gripping, definitely a must-read! I only have one issue with it, it is the fact that I simply couldn't put it down!... Read Full Review

Like any other Jacqueline Wilson book, The Other Edie Trimmer was exciting to read.

This book was great. It was about a girl called Edie who loves acting and when she doesn't get the leading role in a play called Oliver! However, her best friend does and Edie starts to hate acting.

When she's given a real old Victorian notebook, she discovers that there was another Edie Trimmer exactly like her but from the 1800s.... Read Full Review

This book is emotional and fun to read.

"The other Edie Trimmer" I first thought it was two girls with the same name at the same school, not the same life!! This book is emotional and fun to read, I suggest children aged 8 to 11 should read it, whenever it says "I put my hand on my head to check its not bleeding" I also put my hand on my head!!...
