"An entertaining introduction to the concept of height"
When a mouse spots a delicious-looking cake on top of a cupboard, too high to reach, the story that follows – involving a monkey, a rabbit, squirrel, frog and hedgehog – is both satisfyingly funny and an effective first lesson in the concept of height. With the cake frustratingly out of reach, the animals try different means to help mouse up to the top. Rabbit can hop, but not high enough, and they’re all too short individually; they’ll have to work together.
The tower of animals grows, a great visual demonstration of something getting higher, and there’s a happy ending with the cake divided up for everyone. As little ones enjoy the funny story, they’re also learning the maths concept of height and picking up lots of key vocabulary too.
The book also features useful tips for parents/adults to help them get the most out of the book when sharing it with children, and there are fun activities at the back too to be tried at home and outside. Well thought out, this is an enjoyable way to support early mathematical learning.
