LoveReading4Kids Says
Shortlisted for the Branford Boase Award 2018 | In a nutshell: hilarious courtly adventure from one of our funniest, most inventive writer-illustrators
Elys Dolan fills her first adventure story for young readers with the madcap invention and humour that are the trademark of her picture books. Dave is a dragon, but not a typical one: he’d much rather bury his nose in a book than a treasure hoard and when he picks up a second-hand copy of How to be a Knight, he knows he’s found his calling. Ably assisted by his trusty steed Albrecht who, though a goat, has all the requisite attributes – attitude, looks, glossiness, not to mention the ability to speak, and a decidedly colourful past – he sets out to win his knighthood. There’s something funny on each page either in the text or illustrations and this will have every reader laughing. Underneath the humour is a lovely message about being true to yourself. ~

About
Knighthood for Beginners Synopsis
Brilliant new young fiction from comedy genius, Elys Dolan, creator of Steven Seagull, Weasels, and Nuts in Space. High in the mountains are the Dragon Caves, and inside the deepest, darkest dragon cave, lives the most terrible dragon. And his name is Dave. Dave's terrible (as in rubbish) at all dragony things. So when he finds a book called Knighthood for Beginners he decides to learn how to be a knight instead. Dave sets out on a quest with his trusty steed, Albrecht the goat (all the best horses were taken), to be brave, chivalrous, and knightly in all ways. He'll be up against Sir Gnasty, who scoffs at the idea of a very small, strangely green knight and has an absolutely massive sword. Hilarious fiction for young readers and fans of dragons, knights, and quests!

Elys Dolan Press Reviews
Praise for Steven Seagull:
Full of cross-over jokes which will appeal to children and adults too, making it a perfect book to share. Parents in Touch
Praise for Nuts in Space:
Dolans illustrations are a dippy delight and the jokes in the many speech bubbles funny enough to stand the test of many readings. A classic in the cracking. Childrens Book of the Week, The Times
Praise for Weasels:
Dolan's hysterical picture book follows the weasels at work on the day they plan to seize global power but unexpected obstacles keep thwarting their efforts, from faulty machinery to over-zealous health and safety inspectors [] Every page is a treasure trove of hilarity and it will take several reads to pick up on all the clever little details which Dolan has scattered about the place. Its also fun to follow the progress of individual weasels as the story unfolds keep an eye out for the one with the huge drill, who happens to be my personal favourite. Picture Book of the Month, The Independent
Praise for The Clockwork Dragon:
Illustrator Elys Dolan brings Emmetts imaginative, exciting and funny story to life with colourful, appealing artwork... Lancashire Evening Post

About Elys Dolan
Elys Dolan is an author and illustrator living in Cambridge. She grew up in a part of Sussex that consists almost entirely of trees and cows and she was named after a department store in Wimbledon. She's never let either of these things hold her back and Elys recently graduated with distinction from the MA in Children's Book Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art. Elys has been awarded second place in the Macmillan Prize and was also shortlisted for the Waterstone's ‘Picture This’ prize.
She works predominantly with paint markers, watercolours, and a splash of digital witchcraft. Elys has a PhD in funny picture books and when she’s feeling fussy insists that people refer to her as “Dr Dolan”. When not doing pictures and making things up Elys enjoys growing cacti, keeping bees and plotting how rabbits can win elections.
The Bookseller's Fiona Noble picked Elys as 'One to Watch' in 2015. When not doing pictures and making things up, Elys enjoys growing cacti, collecting pocket watches and eating excessive amounts of fondant fancies.
