This very funny picture book works on a number of different levels. Children will love the characters: renegade seagull cop Steve; his sidekick Mac, a goldfish in a bowl (though complete with police badge); Lola the glamorous hippo lifeguard. They’ll also love being able to solve the crime before the cops – sharp eyes will spot that it’s the crabs who are sneakily stealing the sand. Adults will laugh at Steven Seagull, at the cop-buddy film spoofs and – those of a certain age anyway – will pick up the odd Baywatch reference! It’s all great fun and the pages are full of extra comic details that will keep everyone smiling. ~ Andrea Reece
Find out how Steven Seagull saves Beach City in this hilarious action-packed picture book from the creator of Weasels, Elys Dolan. It's packed with cross-over jokes to appeal to children and adults too. The artwork is full of details for poring over time and time again. And you'll get to see sharks playing volleyball, a goldfish driving a speedboat, crabs building sandcastles ...oh, and the most hilarious life-guard ever!
Elys Dolan is an author and illustrator living in Cambridge. She grew up in a part of Sussex that consists almost entirely of trees and cows and she was named after a department store in Wimbledon. She's never let either of these things hold her back and Elys recently graduated with distinction from the MA in Children's Book Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art. Elys has been awarded second place in the Macmillan Prize and was also shortlisted for the Waterstone's ‘Picture This’ prize.
She works predominantly with paint markers, watercolours, and a splash of digital witchcraft. Elys has a PhD in funny picture books and when she’s feeling fussy insists that people refer to her as “Dr Dolan”. When not doing pictures and making things up Elys enjoys growing cacti, keeping bees and plotting how rabbits can win elections.
The Bookseller's Fiona Noble picked Elys as 'One to Watch' in 2015. When not doing pictures and making things up, Elys enjoys growing cacti, collecting pocket watches and eating excessive amounts of fondant fancies.
