January 2016 Book of the MonthEcho Come Home has all the hallmarks of her writing that make Megan Rix’s books such favourites with young readers: it’s a gripping story, the animal heroes are vividly drawn and there’s a lovely emphasis on the unconditional love and loyalty that dogs give to people. Echo is a stray living on the streets though smart enough to know all the best spots for free food. When animal rescue finally catch him he’s trained as a hearing dog, and forms a special relationship with Jake, a young boy left with severe hearing loss after contracting meningitis. The details of the work hearing dogs do is lovingly described and, when Echo and Jake are separated, readers will be on tenterhooks until they are reunited. Unbeatable reading for fans of animal stories. ~ Andrea Reece
For more great animal stories, moving, realistic and well told, there is of course Michael Morpurgo, and now Gill Lewistoo.
