LoveReading4Kids Says
In a book which is once again stunningly illustrated by Levi Pinfold, we find ourselves totally immersed in the terrifying Arctic winter in Svalbard.
April has found it hard to settle back in England and equally hard to accept her Dad’s new girlfriend. She has struggled to make friends at her new school and is mocked for her passion for polar bears and the environment. Her heart is very much back in the Arctic and when her regular email from her friend Tör brings news of a polar bear being shot in the very location where she left him, April knows Bear needs her.
Luckily her father understands and drops everything to get her there. What follows is an unforgettable journey across a masterfully evoked frozen landscape, through glaciers and Arctic storms, as April becomes separated from the rest of the party, who are somewhat reluctantly pursuing her quest for Bear. The reunion between Bear and April is powerfully moving and their bond manages to be both magical and convincing.
When April discovers that Bear is trying to save his cub, the journey becomes even more urgent as they fight to survive. The reader, while being so wrapped up in April’s emotions and the dramatic action, is also inescapably learning about the impact of climate change on this special environment and the responsibility we all have to protect it.
The author’s passion for her subject makes for a powerful and memorable reading experience that will certainly not disappoint the many fans of the award-winning The Last Bear, providing a satisfying and credible outcome which leaves you filled with hope for both April and Bear. The perfect blend of adventure and environmental activism, with real emotional depth.

About Hannah Gold
Hannah Gold worked in the film and magazine industries before taking time out to pursue her dream of writing. She lives in Lincolnshire with her tortoise, her cat and her husband. The Last Bear was her middle grade debut which became an inspirational, international bestseller on release in 2021.
On winning the Best Story in the Blue Peter Book Awards 2022, Hannah said: 'When I found out I had won, I burst into tears and couldn't speak. Like many children, I grew up on a diet of Blue Peter, following the show’s adventures and falling in love with all the pets. This feels particularly apt, because whilst The Last Bear touches upon serious themes, at its core, it is a story about the love between a child and an animal. 'Some of my earliest memories are visits to the library with my mum and then scampering back home to lose myself in the pages of a book. Books aren't just about escape. For children, stories play an increasingly important role in teaching empathy, kindness and tolerance. They help shape identity, a sense of belonging and often lend courage.'
