There can be absolutely no doubt that Turtle Moon will simply leap off the shelves, and not just because of the stunning cover by Levi Pinfold. Hannah Gold has established herself as the go to author of fast paced, engaging, eco adventures that not only raise the issues of dangers facing animals on our planet, but also offer the reader so much more in terms of relatable, engaging characters, who are often facing some deeper dilemmas, which are honestly and sensitively explored.
This story follows Silver, an only child, who is struggling to understand the pain her parents face from not being able to have another child and she cannot help but feel that she is not good enough. When an invitation arrives for Silver's dad to travel to Costa Rica to create paintings at a turtle rescue centre, he feels that they should make this trip together in the hope of a fresh start. Beautiful descriptive language makes the jungle setting come alive and the reader shares Silver’s wonder at the natural environment and the abundance of wildlife in the rainforest and most importantly learns about the dangerous situation for turtles. Her confidence and happiness grow through her relationship with Rafi, whose father works at the centre, and with Ana the redoubtable founder. When poachers steal the precious eggs during a storm, Silver and Rafi do not hesitate to set out on a dramatic life and death journey to save them. Experiencing the precarious life cycle of the turtles has helped Silver to understand what motherhood means and about the value of all life, including her own.
A wonderfully satisfying conclusion to an emotionally rich, evocative and exciting story that will, I am sure, win yet more fans and more awards for this extraordinary author.

About Hannah Gold
Hannah Gold worked in the film and magazine industries before taking time out to pursue her dream of writing. She lives in Lincolnshire with her tortoise, her cat and her husband. The Last Bear was her middle grade debut which became an inspirational, international bestseller on release in 2021.
On winning the Best Story in the Blue Peter Book Awards 2022, Hannah said: 'When I found out I had won, I burst into tears and couldn't speak. Like many children, I grew up on a diet of Blue Peter, following the show’s adventures and falling in love with all the pets. This feels particularly apt, because whilst The Last Bear touches upon serious themes, at its core, it is a story about the love between a child and an animal. 'Some of my earliest memories are visits to the library with my mum and then scampering back home to lose myself in the pages of a book. Books aren't just about escape. For children, stories play an increasingly important role in teaching empathy, kindness and tolerance. They help shape identity, a sense of belonging and often lend courage.'
