Strongly drawn and capturing for the lost world of the railways, first published in 1942, this is a beautiful and refreshingly original ABC from ‘A for ALL CLEAR as the signal goes down’ to ‘Z is the zoo which is our destination’. In between, Buffers, the Driver, the Guard and the Porter, the Signals, the Viaduct and the majesty of York station are all vividly brought to life in the richly atmospheric lithographs and simple text.
A Railway ABC is a behind-the-scenes look at the workings of the railroad. Townend's endearing lithograph illustrations - in both colour and monochrome - are accompanied by a gently humorous and whimsical text that will captivate children and adults alike.
V&A Publishing have re-issued this and also A Story About Ducks, both beautifully illustrated long out of print children’s books written and illustrated by Jack Townend during the Second World War.
Jack townend (1918 - 2005) studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and later taught at the Ruskin School of Art where he tutored, among others, Shirley Hughes. In 1948 Townend was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
