Shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2013
June 2012 Debut of the Month. Witty and tender, Geekhood captures the complexities of teen life and especially the transformation of Archie. Archie’s interests have always been distinctly geeky; mostly he hangs out in the Hovel, a centre for games played with miniature models where he and his friends spend hours choosing new characters and the paints to colour them with. It’s not a place that usually attracts girls… But one day, Archie meets a Beautiful Girl and she’s interested in joining a game! Can Archie manage still to play games and to hang onto the girl? Will the Beautiful Girl lead him away from his geeky life? Can he keep his interfering step-father out of the picture? Archie tells his roller coaster journey brilliantly.
Geekhood: Close Encounters of the Girl Kind Synopsis
Fourteen-year-old Archie is a Geek to his core. In the world of role-playing games, he's a Level 5 Mage, capable of summoning the Undead. In this world, things are rather different. With no rule book to navigate Life's Big Challenges - warring parents, a crass step-father, orc-like school bullies and crap hair - he's teetering on the brink... Then a Beautiful Girl appears in his Geeky world... Despite the fact that the closest he's come to an encounter with a girl is painting an Elven miniature, Archie embarks on a Daring Quest to win her heart. Geek meets girl... what could possibly go right?
