Set on a hugely inventive and original world of Likrishka in the country of Candi on Planet Plenti, a place where food pours forth from all directions, this is a fast-moving adventure in which Lydia and her friends in the Sweet Sisterhood must use their magical powers to overthrow Stannic the Master Chef. Stannic is a tyrant growing rich by controlling all the ingredients of the country but his intentions are far from sweet. The power struggle in the land where food is all is an important one!
A piece of passion from the editor who bought the book:
All editors dream of finding something truly startling and original on the unsolicited pile. And for me, Lydia’s Tin Lid Drum is the most exciting unsolicited find I’ve ever had – it shone out like a crazy jewel. It combines the total immersion in another world of The Wizard of Oz with the sense of quest of Jason and the Argonauts – not to mention the sheer yumminess of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! But for all that, it’s completely different from anything I’ve had the joy of reading before – and utterly irresistible.
Nine-year-old Lydia lives in the land of Likrishka, ruled over by Stannic the 'Tin Man', a powerful chef who has placed the country under martial law. His plan is to rule over an obedient population and to instil his tastes into the under-tens by placing them in the care of governesses in robot-policed Detainer Zones. Sweets and other food are the most important things in this world, and the source of all power-and so they are fiercely controlled by Stannic. Something has to be done! When Lydia manages to escape, she is recruited by a group of girls on a mission. Together, they embark on a quest through jungles, tunnels, and caves, past natural and man-made hazards, to find a number of forbidden and dangerous sweets, which eventually they will use in an audacious plan to bring down the tyrannous Stannic and his regime for ever.
