The Great Animal Escape by Linda Harkey has 9 chapters and is 68 pages long. I loved the descriptive text and creative names of the characters. The illustrations are lovely. Mud Pie the Cow and Love-Bull decide to escape during the journey to the cooking school (which they had discovered was not a retirement ranch). They befriend Bernie, the raven chick. Gracie the burro (small donkey) is going to help the 2 escapees. Children will be amused when Bernie lands in some cow dung and the animals have a conversation about this. What will Bernie take as a snack on the trip? The friends get stuck in bad weather. They also don’t notice the danger lurking in the grass behind them. What is following them? Then a blue, two-eyed monster comes straight towards them. Can Lova-Bull protect them? Will Gracie get a chance to save them from the eyes in the bushes? All looks lost, and then they spot black shapes in the sky… Will the animals make it to safety? Blue Moon, the Chihuahuan Raven comes up with a solution to the problem of hunger…. Young readers from about 8 years to about 10 or 11 will love this adventure story with its themes of friendship and teamwork to resolve problems. All the team members can contribute by using their special skills. A bonus is the page of discussion questions and 3 activities provided at the end of the book.
