The Wizard of Oz has been written many times and most of us have seen a film or a play of this timeless story. Dorothy and her dog Toto are carried away in a tornado to the magical land of Oz. Here they encounter witches and wizards and make three special friends, a scarecrow with no brain, a tin man with no heart and a cowardly lion. Throughout the adventure, there is a strong message that we can overcome our fears, that we all need friends and good conquers evil.
This classic tale has been adapted to totally embrace any SEND department. The stories are symbolised, there are clear texts for dyslexic readers, sign language and audio versions.
In parallel with these texts are symbolised stories for those who rely on symbols to access the text. In this way, a far greater percentage of readers can access the world of books, opening up a whole new reading experience.
The symbols are compatible with PECS used by non-verbal pupils, and when I showed a local school specialising in such children, they were ecstatic and beyond enthusiastic about these books. Definitely a new customer for Every Cherry!
There is also a parallel book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: Accessible Easier Edition, adapted for easy reading with a very accessible font, very well-spaced text and clear explanatory illustrations.
