"A phonetic set of books written in a mature and interesting way to appeal to older readers"
Alternative vowel and consonant spellings, and Latin suffixes
This is a set of 10 phonic books written for older children needing phonic support. It is super to find a set of books that are age appropriate and not patronising or demeaning but are written in a mature and interesting way.
The books are written as a series with each book leading on from the one before. The set is called Hidden in Paris, beginning with the first in the series Fortune Hunters, and follows the adventures of a group of young people following a mystery trail to Paris.
The characters are an eclectic mix of characters encompassing different ethnicities and disabilities. Each book focuses on one or two phonetic sounds. There is a contents page, vocabulary for pre reading and a page of extending vocabulary that is really quite stretching with words such as ‘enthused’ and ‘excluded’ The story is told in 10 books, but there is a …previously.. recapping the book before. At the end of each book, there are questions for discussion.
Despite being written phonetically, the books remain compelling, with vibrant illustrations. The characters, are diverse and interesting, making discussion more likely and the use of similes and adjectives manage to unwittingly stretch the readers capabilities.
These are a super set of books, and it is so refreshing to find a truly phonetic set of readers, written in a mature and interesting way that will, I think, appeal to many a reader.
