The start of an exciting adventure story filled with magic, siblings separated at birth and world changing prophecies.
12-year-old Dylan thinks he’s a normal boy until the day he accidentally falls through a vortex into the immortal world. Only accessible to supernatural, immortal beings like elves, fairies, vampires and witches and wizards, Dylan discovers not only his family, who were told he’d died at birth, but also that he is a Warlock with extraordinary magical powers. Dylan, his twin brother Remy and their new wizard friend Thea work together to figure out what happened to the brothers and what it has to do with a mysterious prophecy that has been kept a secret since the start of the immortal world.
Dylan Dover: Into the Vortex by Lynne Howard is a middle-grade fantasy that has something for everyone, magic, mystery, adventure and a sense of self discovery. Dylan’s discovery of the immortal world is a great opportunity for us to discover this parallel yet strange new world through fresh eyes and also explore the differences between the worlds as they’re explained to his curious classmates. The three main characters are smart and likeable, and I am curious about how their powers will develop as the story continues. Although some of the exposition felt a bit clunky sometimes as the setting is being established this is an entertaining start to a story that I’m sure will intrigue fantasy readers, and I’d be interested to see what happens next.
