A caring story of hope and endurance purr-fect for animal lovers. Based on a true story and the author’s experiences of adopting stray cats from Greece, ‘A Tale of Three Tabbies’ by Jane Lightbourne is a story of survival and hope. Life as a stray cat is hard enough, but in 2020 on Agrion, a Greek island not as welcoming to their stray population, life is even harder. With the pandemic, forest fires and the impact of the lack of tourists on restaurants, the three tabbies in the title Silva, Theo and Lila are having a rougher time than normal. When a “bubble” of holidaymakers from England manage to visit between lockdowns, a search begins to find out what’s happening to the stray cats, and a way to help them. I think this book will capture the heart of cat lovers. Told from all perspectives, Jess, Emma, their children and the feline characters, we see the struggles of the strays and the threats they face as well as the holiday from a more familiar perspective, of how children can immediately fall in love with animals. This isn’t the happiest story, and it draws attention to the real struggle of stray cats in Greece, creating an opportunity for further discussion of the work being carried out by charities. It’s also great to see that a portion of the royalties of this book will be donated to that cause too - all the more reason for friends of felines to buy it. I think that this is an enlightening read that will pull on the heartstrings of any young animal lover, and may result in requests to adopt a stray cat.
