"Encouragement to read in any way that suits you"
This is a delightful picture book, told in verse, on all the benefits of reading – whether it be adventure, comics, information or poetry, all are represented. Often picturing a library with lots of readers all browsing the shelves or sitting reading in wherever and whatever form they prefer. I’m definitely of the ‘curl up for hours in a bum-printed chair’ variety but every type of reading is illustrated with humour and empathy. Even down to the hippo reading the back of the soap dispenser whilst in the bathroom!! The idea of total immersion in the story is illustrated cleverly with the reader highlighted whilst all the other, quite noisy, folk are shown greyed out as our reader imagines flying to the moon, sailing the seas or riding dragons.
The benefits of reading are also illustrated with warmth, humour and joyous intent – that reading may inspire a possible future career choice in science or suggest a creative career in art or writing – but there is the lovely disclaimer that ‘no matter how, or what book, or your speed… is that you love to read’.
Every young children’s library and classroom should contain this gentle urging to read, and it should be gifted to all emerging bookworms!
