This is the second outing for Charley and her friend George, aka the Rockstar Detectives.
In book one, they solved a series of high-profile art thefts, now they’re on a film set making a biopic about their adventures, Charley taking the lead, George watching someone else play him from behind the cameras, his favourite place to be.
The two are a lot more film-worthy than the average kids their age as Charley is viral singing sensation selling out concert venues, and George her right-hand man, plus social media manager. This time their mystery-solving skills are even more in demand as it seems someone on the set doesn’t want the film to be a success and a series of ‘accidents’ put Charley in very real danger.
On a busy film set, there are lots of suspects including people very good at pretending to be what they’re not. Can the two find the villain before something really awful happens? The setting is properly glamorous but what really gives these books their sparkle is the relationship between Charley and George, which, full of warmth as well as wise-cracks, is totally convincing. Would-be comedian George moves into the spotlight this time, wowing fans with a live comedy show, including impromptu gags when he’s unable to access the stage in his wheelchair.
Fast-moving, full of heart, and a proper piece of detective fiction, this is one to recommend to fans of Robin Stevens and Sharna Jackson.
