LoveReading4Kids Says

A set of 6 photocopiable maths activities, one for each year group, from Yrs. 1-3 that support the national curriculum. There is an exercise for every day for the 40 weeks of the school year, consisting of 10 questions and a weekly challenge.

These books have obviously been well researched, with a very comprehensive introduction and a detailed content map that explains how the exercises fits in with the maths syllabus. For each week and topic there are three levels available, grasshopper, shinobi, and Grandmaster. As the names suggest, they are geared to ability levels. Grasshopper – whose subheading is catch up-keep up, which focuses on straightforward exercises combined with reviewing previous topics on a regular basis, shinobi level - to build links and make connections, and grandmaster, which, as the name suggests, is more challenging and thought provoking in its approach. There is also a quick check answer page, for effortless marking.

The simplicity of the layout is for me, the appeal of these books. The short 10 question printable exercise is ideal for a warmup, and would work well with a class, private tuition or as part of a homework provision. I also like the fact that the exercises are printed individually, which means that a child can swap levels, depending on progress or indeed a need to review a particular topic, as opposed to a workbook where the child is tied into completing a whole book at the same level, which could be demotivating.

The only negative comment I would make is that the exercises and layout are very similar with no variety in format. However, maybe the repetition and routine are its appeal. They would certainly be a useful photocopiable book to have available, and I would be very happy to add it to my homework schedule – short and clear for parent and child!
