The dramatic end to an ecology focused coming of age duology. ‘Clash of the Totems and the Catastrophe of Callistus’ by Yonnie Garber follows on from ‘Clash of the Totems and the Lost Magaecians’, following the teenage Ellery as she starts another year at her school for Magaecians, a spiritual group who love Mother Earth, or Magae. Ellery is an Ebonoid, more gifted than most Magaecians, having the preternatural ability to inflict pain when feeling negative emotions, she’s struggling with being the one chosen to bring balance back to Mother Earth and torn between siding with and facing the nefarious Saxon Nash. As one by one her friends go missing and fear and suspicion surround her, will Ellery be able to find and save her friends or be swallowed up by the same hate and pain that consumes Nash. Fans of the first book will really enjoy this sequel. I do recommend starting with book one to understand Ellery’s full story and differences between the Magaecians and “Dwellers” - humans not as determined to save the planet from over consumption and mistreatment. ‘Clash of the Totems and the Catastrophe of Callistus’ is a coming-of-age story filled with turbulent emotions, as Ellery’s fear leads her to not trust and lash out at those around her. The story has plenty of action, leading to a dramatic climax and strong themes of conservation, nature and the environment throughout.
