Passionate and rebellious, magical and wicked, what a fascinating bunch the gods, goddesses and pharaohs of ancient Egypt were! And what a wonderful job Jean Menzies and Katie Ponder have done to bring them and their stories to life in this striking compendium of Egyptian myths.

Beginning with the enchanting story of Creation, young readers are immediately catapulted into a world of mystical creatures, powerful gods and more poisonous serpents than you can shake a stick at. They will discover how Osiris was tricked by his own brother and ended up becoming the first ever Mummy…and why the Sun God, Ra, finally retired from Earth after a long and turbulent reign.

The selected tales are woven together with such consideration. It would be easy to lose the thread of certain myths, with their convoluted narratives (and slightly older themes). But with some smart visual storytelling, and perfectly pitched language, this rich history is made 100% accessible for primary-aged children and older. Useful fact-files on the main gods are a valuable addition, and don’t worry about getting all the tricky names right either – there’s a handy pronunciation guide in the end notes!

Whilst some of the stories and characters will be familiar, there are plenty of lesser-known tales that are bound to deepen everyone’s understanding of this civilisation. And best of all? It’s simply a beautiful book to hold in your hands. It’s vibrant and bold and superbly designed. Without doubt it could hold its own on any coffee table, as much as a classroom or bedroom bookshelf.
