Sequel to Flight, Vanessa Harbour’s Safe is a thrilling, fast-paced WWII adventure replete with a band of brave children, an inspiring sense of coming together, and overtones of Eva Ibbotson in its style, atmosphere and descriptive detail. Kizzy is an orphaned Roma girl. Jakob, too, has lost his parents.
After their perilous voyage across the Austrian mountains to protect Lipizzaner stallions, after finding refuge with a wealthy, well-meaning countess — whose determination to turn free-spirited Kizzy into a marriageable young lady does not go down well — the brave duo face yet more danger.
As the final, brutal days of WWII unfold, Kizzy and Jakob volunteer for another jeopardous expedition to save more horses, this time to the Sudetenland. When it becomes clear they’ve been betrayed, they find shelter in an apparently abandoned, opulent schloss. But they’re not alone – seven children are here, too, along with forty horses that need saving.
With danger closing in, the group determine to leave the schloss to find a way home. With authentic dynamics between the children, and the horrors of war recounted with honesty, this adventure sees hope and courage shine through the darkest of days.
