LoveReading4Kids Says
Interest Age 5-8
Dimple the little gnome is upset because his dad is going away with work. It’s the start of a couple of bad days: mum serves up yucky cabbage pie for tea, Mrs Miskin next door won’t throw his balls back, and the last straw is all his classmates laughing at him when he can’t spell ‘gnome’.
Throughout all of this, Dimple has a Boo in his pocket, a fuzzy, fizzing little thing that yells, shouts and stamps with rage and frustration on Dimple’s behalf. It gets him into trouble, but a chat with Mrs Miskin and then Mum shows him a much better way to react when he’s frustrated or angry.
Dimple is a very sympathetic character and youngsters will completely understand why the Boo takes up residence in his pocket. The gentle, illuminating conclusion will strike a chord too. With colour illustrations by Paula Bowles throughout, this is perfect for children moving from picture books to longer stories, while, in Barrington Stoke style, specialist features make it suitable for dyslexic and reluctant readers too.
