Geronimo is perfectly pitched for newly independent readers with short chapters, a simple storyline and appealing illustrations. Little puppy Geronimo is always hungry, his mother is homeless and there just isn’t enough food to go round. So he heads off on his own and follows a cat through a cat-flap. There’s room for one more in the cat basket and Geronimo is soon happily settled with his adopted mum and kitten sisters and brothers. The cats’ human owners don’t seem to notice at first but Geronimo keeps getting bigger and bigger and seems to be always inadvertently causing chaos – little children will know just how that feels.  There is a happy ending, with Geronimo finding his true place in the family. This gently humorous story will strike a chord with young readers.

You can read about the kitten who thinks she’s a dog in the companion volume Philomena and for more fun animal stories see Michael Morpurgo and Shoo Rayner’s Mudpuddle Farm books, or The Kitten with No Name by Vivian French.   ~ Andrea Reece
