A magical adventure, full of twists and turns, this is a brilliant follow up to Barkbelly. In the world of the Ashenpeakers, wooden people hatch from eggs and have long run the risk of being sold into slavery. When the Hope is attacked by pirates it looks as if all is lost but Snowbone, a small pale girl with a strong sense of purpose, emerges as the new leader of the wooden children. Driving them onwards, she takes them on a fantastical adventure across the world in a flying ship and then right into the heart of a volcano for the final battle and justice. A story full of wonder and excitement where the unexpected suddenly becomes possible.
Snowbone is the natural leader of a band of wooden children, who are tracking down a group of human slavers. Their journey takes them on a wonderful flying ship from island to island, into the heart of a volcano, into the dreadful slave quarry and on to the final battle. This is an adventure story packed with poetry and dark twists of fate.
