Wuthering Heights is Emily Brontë's only novel and was published in 1847, with an edited second version published in 1850, following Emily's death. It was considered controversial at the time because of its depiction of physical and mental cruelty, and it challenged strict Victorian ideals of the day, including gender inequality, religious hypocrisy, morality, and social classes.
