We'd read every hour of the day here at LoveReading4Kids if we could. Sometimes, we're not far off!

But today we're sharing an initiative that we think is great. It's firmly in our calendar and we want to make sure it is for you too.

The Read Hour campaign hails from Finland from 31 August to 8 September and culminates on UN Literacy Day on 8 September at 14:00 for a reading hour. The aim of the Read Hour campaign is to instil a new festival dedicated to literacy and to raise the topic of declining reading, especially among young people.

And this year it is coming to the UK. Taking part in Read Hour couldn’t be easier: all you need to do is spend one hour of your day reading on Wednesday 8th September. The official Read Hour will be held from 2pm – 3pm, but if it’s not possible for you to read either by yourself or with your family at that time, you can do it at any time during the day. And we are super excited that this year Read Hour will be partnering with our friends the Moomins.

The Moomins are one of Finland’s largest export products and have a global fan base. Tove Jansson (1914–2001) wrote and illustrated nine novels, four picture books and hundreds of comics about the Moomins between 1945 and 1970. They are firm favourites right around the world to this day having been translated into more than 55 languages.
