K. Y. Schrader was born and educated in South-East Wales and then moved to Kingston-upon-Thames to study for a degree in French. She lived in the area for sixteen years, completing her degree there, and later worked in magazine publishing - including on a title she and her former husband created, French Property News. She returned to South Wales in 1996 and has enjoyed living a more rural life in Monmouthshire.
