James Thurlby was born in Sheffield, UK in 1920 where he grew up and attended the local grammar school. After his father died, he moved to Rotherham where he worked as a reporter on the local newspaper until the start of the war in 1939. In 1948 James and his wife moved to Dublin where he took up a post as reporter on the Irish Times and enrolled at Trinity College to read Philosophy where he graduated in 1952. Returning to the UK in 1954 James took up a post in the Public Relations Department of ICI in London and they settled in Surrey where they bought the house that James was to live in for the rest of his life. James had always enjoyed writing and had a number of short stories published over the years. When he retired this gave him the opportunity to spend more time on short stories, articles and try his hand at writing a novel. He had many more short stories published during these years, two of them were read on the BBC. James died in November 2002.
