Obwohl Fred sich fest vorgenommen hatte bei dieser Expedition wie ein richtiger Archäologe zu arbeiten, beginnt das Abenteuer gleich am ersten Tag in Syrien. Er trifft auf Baron Max von Oppenheim, der vor über hundert Jahren geheimnisvolle Steinbilder auf dem Tell Halaf entdeckte. Und als ob diese Begegnung nicht schon ungewöhnlich genug wäre, fällt er zusammen mit seinem neuen Freund Sayid in einen alten Brunnenschacht - und in eine andere Welt ...
'Fred am Tell Halaf' führt seine Zuhörer nach Mesopotamien, wo Baron Max von Oppenheim 1899 auf dem Tell Halaf (Tell ist arabisch und bedeutet Hügel) Überreste der aramäischen Stadt Guzana ausgrub. Die durch eine Fliegerbombe im Zweiten Weltkrieg zerstörten Funde wurden neun Jahre lang behutsam rekonstruiert und restauriert.
Was geschah damals wirklich in Tante Eleanors geheimnisvoller Bibliothek? Freds Mutter glaubt, Tante Eleanor sei nicht ganz richtig im Kopf. Freds Vater gibt immerhin zu, dass in der alten Bibliothek 'Dinge' passieren. Und Fred? Er muss das Geheimnis unbedingt lüften! Also fliegt er zusammen mit seinem Vater zu Tante Eleanor nach Ägypten. Tagsüber erforschen sie dort die Ruinen der Stadt Achet-Aton, die Pharao Echnaton für sich und seine schöne Gemahlin Nofretete in den Wüstensand baute. Und nachts erkundet Fred heimlich Tante Eleanors Bibliothek. Doch bald verirrt er sich in Raum und Zeit und kommt dabei der altägyptischen Vorstellung vom Tod näher als ihm lieb ist...
Robin Hood bestiehlt die Reichen und gibt den Armen. Seit er selbst zum Geächteten geworden ist, kann er einfach nicht anders, er muss auf sein Herz hören und für mehr Gerechtigkeit sorgen. Die ist seinem Land nämlich abhanden gekommen. Im Schutz des Sherwood Forest nimmt er zusammen mit seinen Gefährten den Kampf gegen Unterdrückung und Armut auf - und gerät bald selbst in größte Gefahr.
