Enjoy two seafaring adventures by a beloved classic adventure writer in Kidnapped and Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. Robert Louis Stevenson was one of the early masters of the action and adventure genre. His books were adventurous and smart, and written to entice audiences into indulging in high-seas fantasies. Both titles in this collection focus on young men sent on difficult journeys aboard ships as they search for things amid a cast of quirky, dangerous characters. Kidnapped – This book’s narrator is David, a 17-year-old orphan who is set into the world to make a place for himself. He winds up living with his uncle at a family estate, but soon learns that he is the true heir to the estate. Unwilling to give up his wealth, his uncle arranges for David to be kidnapped into service aboard a ship. This event sends him on a perilous path around the seas, trying to get back to his rightful home. Treasure Island – Treasure Island is a coming-of-age story that follows Jim Hawkins, a young man on a journey to find a legendary treasure. Jim leaves his home in search of the treasure after a pirate gives him a map. He assembles a crew to explore the seas and find the treasure, but along the way face dangers and betrayal. On the desolate Essex marshes, a young girl named Fritha arrives at a remote lighthouse seeking help from its lonely inhabitant: Philip Rhayader, a crippled artist who has established a bird sanctuary on his land. The girl brings to him a wounded snow goose, which the gentle Philip takes under his care. Soon a friendship blossoms as he and Fritha nurse the bird back to health, though as the years pass, Fritha visits the lighthouse only when the snow goose is there. Then the outbreak of World War II draws Philip away from his home to help in the war effort—and suddenly Fritha has a new reason to return to the lighthouse. Beautifully written all the way through to its powerful ending, The Snow Goose has been in print since its original publication in 1941. “Written during some of the darkest days of the last century, this sad, sweet tale still makes heartwarming reading.”—Guardian (London)

Black Beauty: The Autobiography of a Horse
From its first publication in 1877, Black Beauty has been one of the best-loved animal stories ever written. The dramatic and heartwarming tale is told by the magnificent black horse himself, from his idyllic days on a country squire's estate to his harsh fate as a London cab horse and his merciful rescue by two kindly old ladies. Filled with vivid anecdotes about animal intelligence, the novel derives a special magic from the love of all creatures, great and small, apparent on every page. But the book's lasting impact comes from its descriptions of a human society struggling to find the goodness within itself and its plea for kindness to all creatures-a message so powerful that this favorite classic began a crusade for animal welfare that continues to this day. "One of the best animal stories every written, Black Beauty charts the decline and fall of a well-bred horse brought low by neglectful grooms and overwork in the cab trade...Black Beauty himself is finally saved...less fortunate is his high-spirited friend in harness Ginger, whose ignoble death in the streets of London makes for one of the most powerful passages in all children's literature."-The Cambridge Guide to Literature in English

The magic unfolds from the first lines of Water Rat's soliloquy about messing about in boats in this captivating version of Kenneth Grahame's classic. Although it's generally considered a children's book, get a copy for yourself as well as the child in your life, as you won't want to give this away. Ralph Cosham's performance is a study in characterization without over-dramatization. His Ratty is breezy and lighthearted, his Mole shy and considerate. His Badger sounds just like that gruff old man you once knew who had a heart of gold. And his Toad-- well, his Toad is perfectly insufferable. Cosham sounds as if he is reading his favorite work of fiction, and his affection is contagious. Originally from Britain, Ralph Cosham has been in the US for over 30 years. He has had roles in major films and television but spends of most his time with the Shakespeare Theater in Washington, D.C. He has a truly remarkable talent for reading, and has received many awards for his narrations.

Frankenstein is the most famous novel by Mary Shelley: a dark Faustian parable of science misused that was an immediate success on its publication in 1818. Purporting to be the record of an explorer, it tells of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but wayward student of science, who builds a human from dead flesh. Horrified by what he has done, he abandons his creation. The creature, an outcast for his horrific appearance, learns language and becomes civilized. In time, he attempts to join society but is rejected because he is assumed to have murderous intentions. Spurned, he seeks vengeance on his creator. So begins a cycle of destruction, with Frankenstein and his 'monster' pursuing each other to the extremes of nature until all vestiges of their humanity are lost in monomaniacal hatred.
