Christmas on Ganymede by Isaac Asimov - Consider the problems of miners who work on Ganymede, moon of Jupiter, 390,000,000 miles from earth: isolated on a world so different from our own, surrounded by beings who know nothing of our traditions, how might these men teach their alien work-mates how we celebrate Christmas? Olaf Johnson hummed nasally to himself and his china-blue eyes were dreamy as he surveyed the stately fir tree in the corner of the library. Though the library was the largest single room in the Dome, Olaf felt it none too spacious for the occasion. Enthusiastically he dipped into the huge crate at his side and took out the first roll of red-and-green crepe paper. What sudden burst of sentiment had inspired the Ganymedan Products Corporation, Inc. to ship a complete collection of Christmas decorations to the Dome, he did not pause to inquire. Olaf’s was a placid disposition, and in his self-imposed job as chief Christmas decorator, he was content with his lot. He frowned suddenly and muttered a curse. The General Assembly signal light was flashing on and off hysterically. With a hurt air Olaf laid down the tack-hammer he had just lifted, then the roll of crêpe paper, picked some tinsel out of his hair and left for officers quarters. Commander Scott Pelham was in his deep armchair at the head of the table when Olaf entered. His stubby fingers were drumming unrhythmically upon the glass-topped table. Olaf met the commander’s hotly furious eyes without fear, for nothing had gone wrong in his department in twenty Ganymedan revolutions. The room filled rapidly with men, and Pelham’s eyes hardened as he counted noses in one sweeping glance. 'We’re all here. Men, we face a crisis!' There was a vague stir. Olaf’s eyes sought the ceiling and he relaxed. Crises hit the Dome once a revolution, on the average.

A Traveler in Time by August Derleth - You can't always escape evils by running away from them... but it may help! 'Tell me what time is,' said Harrigan one late summer afternoon in a Madison Street bar. 'I'd like to know.' 'A dimension,' I answered. 'Everybody knows that.' 'All right, granted. I know space is a dimension and you can move forward or back in space. And, of course, you keep on aging all the time.' 'Elementary,' I said. 'But what happens if you can move backward or forward in time? Do you age or get younger, or do you keep the status quo?' 'I'm not an authority on time, Tex. Do you know anyone who traveled in time?' Harrigan shrugged aside my question. 'That was the thing I couldn't get out of Vanderkamp, either. He presumed to know everything else.' 'Vanderkamp?' 'He was another of those strange people a reporter always runs into. Lived in New York—downtown, near the Bowery. Man of about forty, I'd say, but a little on the old-fashioned side. Dutch background, and hipped on the subject of New Amsterdam, which, in case you don't know, was the original name of New York City.' 'Don't mind my interrupting,' I cut in. 'But I'm not quite straight on what Vanderkamp has to do with time as dimension.' 'Oh, he was touched on the subject. He claimed to travel in it. The fact is, he invented a time-traveling machine.'

The Misplaced Battleship by Harry Harrison - It might seem a little careless to lose track of something as big as a battleship ... but interstellar space is on a different scale of magnitude. But a misplaced battleship—in the wrong hands!—can be most dangerous. When it comes to picking locks and cracking safes I admit to no master. The door to Inskipp's private quarters had an old-fashioned tumbler drum that was easier to pick than my teeth. I must have gone through that door without breaking step. Quiet as I was though, Inskipp still heard me. The light came on and there he was sitting up in bed pointing a .75 caliber recoilless at my sternum. 'You should have more brains than that, diGriz,' he snarled. 'Creeping into my room at night! You could have been shot.' 'No I couldn't,' I told him, as he stowed the cannon back under his pillow. 'A man with a curiosity bump as big as yours will always talk first and shoot later. And besides—none of this pussyfooting around in the dark would be necessary if your screen was open and I could have got a call through.' Inskipp yawned and poured himself a glass of water from the dispenser unit above the bed. 'Just because I head the Special Corps, doesn't mean that I am the Special Corps,' he said moistly while he drained the glass. 'I have to sleep sometime. My screen is open only for emergency calls, not for every agent who needs his hand held.' 'Meaning I am in the hand-holding category?' I asked with as much sweetness as I could. 'Put yourself in any category you please,' he grumbled as he slumped down in the bed. 'And also put yourself out into the hall and see me tomorrow during working hours.' He was at my mercy, really. He wanted sleep so much. And he was going to be wide awake so very soon. 'Do you know what this is?' I asked him, poking a large glossy pic under his long broken nose. One eye opened slowly.

The Incredible Invasion by George O. Smith - It's very difficult to find a good, sound. legal way of stopping an aggressor—when the victims always anxiously invite him to come in and take over! Jim Franklen paused a moment before he opened the door of the office. He stopped to read the black lettering with a surface of pride—he was a part of it. The sign read: UNITED NATIONS WEAPON SECURITY COUNCIL Thomas Winter, President Then Franklen opened the door and went in, confidently. He greeted the man behind the desk, who looked up worriedly from a maze of paper work and bade Franklen to sit down. Winter said: 'Trouble, Franklen. Bad trouble.' Franklen nodded. 'I know,' he said. 'I've been following it. I gather that the fools are getting worse?' Winter agreed with a slight nod of the head and replied: 'I can't imagine what they're up to. Yet they continue to rattle the saber and make demands. The Central Power is not ignorant of the ramifications of their acts. Not after we've made point-blank statements. But they continue to get rougher and bolder, just as though they had the world in the palm of their hands.' 'They know that they can't win, don't they?' asked Franklen. 'They should—they've been told, and they have been shown exactly what will happen, how, and why. The proof is irrevocable, undeniable. Still they continue.' 'I understand we've been watching them closely.'

Adjustment Team by Philip K. Dick - Something went wrong... and Ed Fletcher got mixed up in the biggest thing in his life It was bright morning. The sun shone down on the damp lawns and sidewalks, reflecting off the sparkling parked cars. The clerk came walking hurriedly, leafing through his instructions, flipping pages and frowning. He stopped in front of the small green stucco house for a moment, and then turned up the walk, entering the back yard. The dog was asleep inside his shed, his back turned to the world. Only his thick tail showed. 'For Heaven's sake,' the clerk exclaimed, hands on his hips. He tapped his mechanical pencil noisily against his clipboard. 'Wake up, you in there.' The dog stirred. He came slowly out of his shed, head first, blinking and yawning in the morning sunlight. 'Oh, it's you. Already?' He yawned again. 'Big doings.' The clerk ran his expert finger down the traffic-control sheet. 'They're adjusting Sector T137 this morning. Starting at exactly nine o'clock.' He glanced at his pocket watch. 'Three hour alteration. Will finish by noon.' 'T137? That's not far from here.' The clerk's thin lips twisted with contempt. 'Indeed. You're showing astonishing perspicacity, my black-haired friend. Maybe you can divine why I'm here.' 'We overlap with T137.' Exactly. Elements from this Sector are involved. We must make sure they're properly placed when the adjustment begins.'
