Though George Washington Carver was born into slavery, he overcame great obstacles to become a renowned educator and agricultural researcher. He eventually became head of the agricultural department of the Tuskegee Institute. He shared his expertise with farmers, especially poor farmers in the South, to help them get the most out of their crops.
