Highlights presents A Medal for Maria written by Michael Sandler. Eva, a young runner who has just won a race, gives her medal to her older sister Maria, who has a disability. Eva's rival lashes out at Maria and says that Maria will never win any medals of her own. When the girls' mother suggests that Maria compete in a Special Olympics run, both girls think it is a great idea. Eva helps Maria train, and Maria ends up winning first place and getting her own medal.
Highlights presents Cikala and the Winter Monster written by Michael Sandler. Cikala is smaller than all of his friends, but is known for being brave. When a scary monster shows up at Cikala's village, the villagers are terrified and do not know what to do. Cikala devises a brave plan that both helps the monster and achieves the villagers' goal of getting rid of the monster.
