About

Gemini (Classic Reprint) Synopsis

If you are in the mood for one of the domestic novels popular in the 19th Century, then you should give Gemini, by Emily Fox, a try. During the Victorian era, the number of women writers exploded, and the appetite for works by women about their lives followed suit. By the end of the century there were more women authors than men. Their contributions to literature were frequently dismissed and even today many popular novels are overlooked.

Gemini is a typical example of a popular domestic novel. The novel tells the story of twins Penserosa and Allegra, who's mother is described as a citified Southern woman who had difficulty in the harsh northern climate, and father, Elder Mason, a beloved and mild preacher. Tragedy strikes the twins and a colorful cast of characters enters the story as the book follows the girls through their childhood. By young adulthood the twins are forced to make hard choices about their future. Will they stay together? What will happen to their family? Will they move? And what about male suitors? To find out, you must read the novel to its conclusion.

The Civil War is a subtle backdrop to much of the action. Fox's style is well balanced and she does not dwell on historical or natural descriptions, preferring instead to focus on dialogue between the characters. Although some of the characters use regional dialects, it does not impose itself on the prose to be a distraction. Gemini is a short novel that a reader could finish in one or two afternoons and thoroughly enjoy.
